Making the Most of Your Curriculum

How to Adapt Radiant Life to Work for You

August 12, 2024

As we put together each quarter of Radiant Life Adult, our editorial team realizes:

  1. Every believer is unique. You are a unique teacher, working with a unique set of God-given gifts, serving a unique group of students in a unique church. Of all the people eading this sentence, none of you are exactly the same!
  2. God’s Word is universal. Even though every believer is one-of-a-kind, God uses the same channels to speak to all of us—His Word and His Spirit.

Our challenge is to create curriculum that is biblically sound and serves everyone—mature saints and brand-new believers, megachurches and rural congregations, retirees and college grads. Offering a wide variety of adaptable materials is the best way we’ve found to meet that challenge. But we realize that all those choices can sometimes be overwhelming.

Here are some ideas to help you adapt the pieces of Radiant Life Adult to fit your unique ministry context.

Teacher Guide

Whether you use the annual hardback volume or the quarterly Teacher Guide or have a digital subscription, you can adapt each lesson to fit the specifics of your class.

  • Every class should read aloud the Scripture Reading so everyone has a solid biblical foundation for the lesson. But it’s up to you whether you read it all at once at the beginning of class or break it up into sections that match the three parts of the lesson.
  • To reach students who are already familiar with the Bible, dive deeper into the verse-by-verse commentary to find information that might be new to them.
  • To reach students who are new believers, start by explaining the basics of the biblical passage. Then focus on the author’s suggested application, usually found near the end of each segment of the lesson.
  • If your time is limited, don’t feel like you have to cover everything in the lesson. Instead, just highlight the sections that are most relevant for your class.
  • Decide which discussion questions are mostly likely to spark conversation in your group. Feel free to add your own.

Resource Packet

The Resource Packet helps you engage the different types of learners in your class. That way, you can make sure everyone is growing in their understanding of God’s Word.

  • Each lesson includes three worksheets and a Daily Bible Reading guide. Don’t feel pressured to use them all. Instead, decide which worksheets would appeal most to your students and fit within your class time frame. Then make copies and hand them out during class.
  • Pay close attention to the resource item descriptions in the Teacher Guide. They will help you decide whether to use certain worksheets in class or send them home with students for their personal devotions during the week.
  • You can hand out the review quizzes as they’re written, or maybe you could use the questions and answers we provide to create a review game instead. A quick Google search will turn up lots of ideas for creating a fun game to play in class or online during the week.
  • The full-color classroom posters stapled in the center of the Resource Packet illustrate lesson themes for students. The promotional posters on the inside covers can help you advertise the class in your church or community.

Student Guide

The Student Guide provides the Scripture Reading, discussion questions, and a condensed version of each lesson. Depending on your students’ preferences, they may use the Student Guide to study and prepare before each lesson, follow along during class time, or continue studying the material after class.

Lesson Folders

These loose-leaf handouts include the Scripture Reading and a condensed version of the material found in the Student Guide. You can provide them for class visitors so they can follow along during the lesson. Or you might choose to send them to students who missed a week of class so they can keep up with the flow of the lesson series.
